Multi-Tiered System of Supports at North Garner Middle
What is MTSS?
A multi-step process of providing instruction and support to promote academic and behavioral success of all children. Individual student progress is monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. North Garner middle school will be using the MTSS model to support the academic, social and behavioral needs of all our students. This process is monitored by the Multi-Tiered System of Supports team.
What does the academic process look like?
The MTSS process has three tiers. Each tier provides differing levels of support.
Tier I, receive high quality curriculum and instruction in the general education classroom. The teacher assists all students.
Tier II, the school provides supplemental instructional support, usually in small groups, to students who need additional support to what they are receiving from their general curriculum.
Tier III, intense instructional support is provided to student with the greatest needs, with frequent progress
monitoring.
What are the key components to any MTSS process?
A key component to the MTSS process is that all students receive high quality curriculum and instruction in the general education classroom (Tier I).
Another component of the MTSS process is that the school will conduct iReady diagnostics three times a year to all students to monitor progress. As a result of these screenings, students may be identified as needing supplemental instruction (a Tier II level of support) in addition to high quality instruction they are receiving at Tier I. Research based interventions are used to support students in their area of need. Progress monitoring will play a key role in determining student progress through the MTSS process. When the student meets their goal, the intervention will no longer be needed. Our school's main goal is to have a support system in place to support the student academically and socially as we prepare them to for their next level of education.
What role do parents play in the MTSS process?
If your student needs more support than the Tier II instruction, we will contact you. You play a key role in your student’s success.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.
Thank you!
